if the location of the pontoon howrah bridge, i.e the connecting points of the then calcutta and howrah could be mentioned — we could have a clear picture

  Thanks Subhas. So far I gather the 1st bridge on Hooghly stood between Howrah and the Armenian Ghat.
  
  “Sir W. Grey, the then Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, was in favour of a road-bridge at Armenian Ghat, but suggested a floating-bridge ” as a temporary measure” [Thacker’s Guide 1901]
  “Between Howrah and Calcutta is the famous iron Pontoon Bridge, called “Hooghly-Bridge.” The width of the Hooghly River between the bank of the river Howrah side and the Armenian ghat on the opposite side is about 600 yards.” [Rev C Cesry. Indian Gods, Sages and Cities. 1881]
  
  I am not too happy with my answer for not being able to provide exact location on Howrah side.
