Sudder Dewany Adawlut, Speke Street, Chowringhee, Calcutta, c 1833

The view shows the government building on Speke Street, now Sudder Street, that was home to the court known as the Sudder Dewany Adawlut –  the court of civil appeal for Indians outside the jurisdiction of Calcutta. The law was administered under Hindu or Muslim legal codes as appropriate.
This lithograph derives from plate 12 of the ‘Views of Calcutta’, an album of paintings by William Wood
