Council House St, Calcutta. Some detective work by me using Montague Massey’s “Recollections of Calcutta Over Half a Century” 1918 and John Barry’s “Calcutta Illustrated” 1957 confirmed that this handsome brick building was originally the Alliance Bank of Simla. This bank failed and was liquidated in 1923.The Reserve Bank of India is India’s central bank and was only created in 1935. It became the banker to the Indian Government taking over from the Imperial Bank and was nationalised in 1949 after Independence. The RBI have built a huge Soviet-style monstrosity in Dalhousie Square when the present building became too small.
